The dorsal tongue in this 36-year old male patient has a general white-yellow discoloration with a central brown patch. The patient is a heavy smoker (more than 20 cigarettes per day) and a coffee drinker.
Notes: The discoloration is only partially wipeable. The discoloration stems from stains from tobacco and the coffee he drinks several times a day. Hairy tongue can be treated by regular tongue cleaning, and ideally a reduction or even cessation of the smoking habit.
